Austin From Scratch: An Interview with Drew Gressett, Founder of Hat Creek Burger Company

Austin From Scratch is our favorite series on the blog and involves Owen (age 7) and Malia (age 5) interviewing local entrepreneurs who have created a thriving business here in the heart of Texas.  For this session, we sat down with Drew Gressett, Founder of Hat Creek Burger Company.  The kids selected Hat Creek because they love the burgers and their awesome outdoor play-scape.  I supported their decision, of course, because I’m a big fan of their milkshakes.

Owen (our seven-year-old son)
What were your favorite things to do as a kid?

Drew (Drew Gressett, Founder of Hat Creek)
My favorite thing to do was easily play basketball.  That’s what I loved doing growing up.  That’s all I did…all day every day.  I would play it inside and then outside.  That was my childhood for sure.

Owen
How did you go about learning as a child?

Drew
I would say that I learned the most from the sports teams I was on and what it meant to be a good teammate and a good leader on the team.  Setting a good example and being part of those teams that I was on – basketball, baseball and soccer as a young kid – that was where I learned the most through the years.

Owen
Did you ever ride your bike?

Drew
I still ride a bike.  Back then, I rode a bike sometimes.  But I actually like bikes more now than I did when I was your age.  I remember riding my bike through the neighborhood between basketball games.

Owen
When did you first know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

Drew
At some point along the way, probably when I was in high school, I really thought “wouldn’t it be fun to someday own a hamburger stand.”  And that’s when it all started.  For me, being a hamburger guy was more important than an entrepreneur because I always loved burgers.

Owen
What is your favorite thing about being an entrepreneur?

Drew
The good part about being an entrepreneur is the flexibility you get and all the different things you work on in a given day.  For example, I’m having a business meeting with you right now and the guy that just left a minute ago, I was having a meeting with him and I’m going to leave here soon and check on some stuff we’re working on outside of the office.  So it’s kinda fun to be in multiple environments during the course of a day.  There’s something different every day and sometimes you can’t plan it until the day arrives.

Owen
What would you be doing if you weren’t running Hat Creek Burger Company?

Drew
That’s a good question.  I’d probably be in a sport or at least something related to sports.  I’d probably be a basketball coach.  I probably would have gone into coaching.

Owen
What is your favorite hamburger?

Drew
My favorite burger is the Big Hat with American cheese and ketchup only (stated with much conviction).  That’s my bread and butter.  That’s my go to burger.

Owen
Do you have any advice for young entrepreneurs?

Drew
I think it goes back to being a great teammate.  If you can understand what it means to be a great teammate by your leadership and playing harder than everyone on your team, that will go a long way in being a successful entrepreneur.

Malia (our five-year-old daughter)
How did you come up with this idea?

Drew
When I was in a high school, it was a dream to have a hamburger place.  So it’s been going on for a long time and it’s always been a dream of mine to have my own little restaurant.  So luckily it came to fruition.

All this talk about burgers had left us very hungry so we headed straight for Hat Creek to try the Big Hat with American cheese and ketchup.  Thank you Drew!
